May 2025 A&F Times
May Column

Spring is here and Commencement is once again around the corner. Over two days, students and families converge on our campus to celebrate their achievements as we all provide an exceptional capstone to the students' journey at Sonoma State University. With all the joy, celebrations, pomp and circumstance, Commencement is one of my favorite days of the year. (As an aside, if you've ever wondered why the song Pomp and Circumstance is universally played at graduations, check out this article by the Smithsonian Magazine.)
While it can be a challenging time of year, with all the work we all do to prepare for the end of the semester and the end of the fiscal year, Commencement is a great reminder of the important work we do to improve the lives of our students and create a better future for our community. No matter what department we work within, we impact our students' lives in more ways than we know. Whether we are on the front lines, back of house, or in leadership positions, we all have an impact. In times of great change, challenging news and a difficult educational environment, let's not forget the great work we do and why we do it. Let Commencement be a reminder to us all of the great work we have done in helping our students achieve their goals and creating a better North Bay community.
And to all of our student graduates within A&F, congratulations! We're so proud of you and excited to see what great things you do next.
What's Happening on Campus
SSU's First OpenAI Day
Sonoma State University’s first OpenAI Day will take place on Tuesday, May 6th! The OpenAI team will be on site to lead each session, sharing insights and real-world applications from institutions worldwide. Whether you are already experimenting with AI or just beginning to explore its potential, these discussions will provide valuable perspectives and practical takeaways. We hope you’ll join us for one or more of these important conversations! Advanced registration is encouraged, but not required. All sessions are open to all members of the campus community, the schedule and registration link can be found here.
Cruising Through the Tropics Buffet
It’s time to get tropical! Cruising Through the Tropics Buffet themed dinner will take place May 8, 2025 at 4pm. Come enjoy the sweet, citrus-y flavors through foods such as the Pineapple Glazed Sweet Potatoes, Coconut Shrimp with Mango Cocktail Sauce, and more. Cool off by the Tropical Mocktail station as you enjoy a tropical Pina Colada or Blue Hawaiian drink. And are you a fan of Moana? Well, you can enjoy Moana-inspired dishes such as the Pua Pie and Te Fiti’s Sea Bean Salad. There’s something for everyone, so stop on by to get away from the hustle and bustle of school and enjoy a day in paradise. We hope to see you there!
Seawolves Dig In!
On Tuesday, April 22, dozens of Sonoma State students, faculty, staff, and community members came together to celebrate Earth Day with the third annual Seawolves Dig In! The group was split into five teams who each worked on a different area around campus to plant fruit trees, flowers, and native plants. At the same time, participants learned sustainable gardening practices, such as sheet mulching, and had the opportunity to assist with habitat restoration along the Copeland Creek Corridor and in the Butterfly Garden.
A special thanks to our campus partners in Facilities Management, Academic Affairs, and the President's Sustainability Advisory Council who make this event possible!
Congrats, Class of 2025!
This year we have more than 45 student assistants graduating within A&F! While we will miss having them on our teams, we are so proud of their accomplishments and excited to see what they do next.

Celebrating Community Partnership
Sonoma State University and the Cities of Rohnert Park and Cotati celebrated the launch of their strategic partnership on Monday, April 21st. This event brought together the campus community as well as leaders from around the North Bay who are committed to increasing collaboration, engagement, and growth in the region. While SSU and the cities have worked together in an informal capacity for many years, the new Memorandum of Understanding between the three formalizes that partnership.
The event was emceed by Professor Rob Eyler and included remarks on current and future collaboration opportunities from Cotati City Manager, Damien O'Bid; Rohnert Park Chamber of Commerce CEO, Lisa Orloff; Interim President, Emily Cutrer; Rohnert Park Mayor, Gerard Giudice; and Cotati Mayor (and SSU Faculty Member) Ben Ford. The MOU was signed by Cutrer, Giudice, and Ford. Key pillars of the agreement include advancing economic development, research, and education in the region, while continuing to celebrate the culture, heritage, and people who make the North Bay extraordinary.
Shoutouts!
General Services extends a sincere thanks to everyone involved in the installation of our new copier fleet! We initiated a campus-wide copier refresh project to replace outdated equipment, optimize the fleet size, and reduce lease costs by 30%. The project was successfully completed at the start of this year. Carolyn Falconer in Contracts & Procurment worked diligently on finalizing the contract. Tori Chavez, our project manager, effectively ensured we set and manageable timelines and met goals. From the first phase of the project involving the addition of a management server to the final phase of installation, our partners in IT came through. Michael Nelson, Vaughn Bellwood, and Louis Wurz-Wilfong collaborated with the vendor to ensure access to software essential for returning usage data and enabling remote management of the fleet. Mira Aceves updated network configurations each morning of installation, ensuring the new copiers were available to users immediately following power-up. Nick Arnold offered valuable suggestions and feedback, confirming and creating new workflows to ensure the Helpdesk can provide excellent end-user desktop support. Your dedication, hard work, and professionalism were vital to the project's success, thank you!
