April Column

Jake Hornsby
Jake Hornsby, AVP for Information Technology

I began my tenure as Chief Information Officer at Sonoma State in December 2024 and, although I am relatively new, I have quickly come to appreciate the campus's resilience and determination, particularly in response to recent challenges. The welcoming community has been exceptionally supportive of both me and my staff as we have navigated significant changes over the past few months.

My main objective as CIO is to advance campus technology with a focus on student success, efficiency, innovation, and collaboration. In IT, this means working to shift our focus from simply maintaining technology, to helping you succeed with it. Our aim is to move beyond just helping you procure and set up your technology or business improvement processes, to one that provides consultation, facilitates positive and impactful change, and is with you throughout your journey, from inception through future iterations. Change like this doesn’t happen overnight, however. Over the coming months, our team will be working on restructuring, training, and modernizing the current technology on campus. This will include simplifying and reducing our technology footprint in lieu of modern, leading-edge platforms and services that allow for agile incremental improvements over time. Additionally, through the deployment of leading tools common within most industries, we can create experiential learning opportunities for student interns and others in a way we could not before.

Some of our current change-focused activities include:

  • Creating a "Partner Network", where we assign every department a dedicated thought partner, to help you through your planning, decision-making, purchasing, and deployment of processes and technologies.
  • Replacing our legacy, custom-built identity management systems, password/auth platforms, DNS, and other technologies, with cloud native platforms, with the potential to reduce our on-premises server footprint by well over 65% this year alone, reducing complexity and effort, costs, and on-premise energy usage.
  • Creating a special internal team that is focused on training, reinventing and rebranding IT, developing customer service strategies, and other activities that often go by the wayside when things get busy (and they will always be busy!).
  • Partnering with other campuses to take on the back-end administration and hosting of core platforms, freeing our staff to manage the customer engagements with these platforms vs. maintaining them.
  • Revamping our wireless infrastructure to provide better security, student self-service for their devices, providing a campus-wide self-service guest network, and other benefits.
  • Creating training opportunities in new and emerging technologies for students, faculty, and staff across the campus, to include AI, to foster learning and ideation across the campus.

From a technology and organizational growth perspective, today is an exciting time to try new methodologies, experiment with emerging technology and new ways of working, and use the successes from those efforts to continue to move the campus forward. The trick is to keep the momentum going, and to do that requires tenacity and, above all, support from your friends and colleagues around you. I am grateful to be here at SSU and am eager to collaborate with and continue to get to know colleagues across campus. Together, we can develop innovative ideas to enhance the student experience and ultimately support their success in the workforce after graduation.

Seawolves Dig In!

Please join the Sonoma State campus community on April 22, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Wine Spectator Learning Center for the third annual Seawolves Dig In community engagement event in celebration of Earth Week!

This is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to participate in hands-on gardening projects across campus in collaboration with other members of the SSU community. Participants will roll up their sleeves and get their hands a little dirty while honoring the earth and being educated on the sustainable landscaping practices our campus has initiated.

If you are interested in participating, please register in advance to receive additional logistical details. Sustainable SSU canvas tote bags will be provided to the first 100 folks to sign up, and each person will be assigned to a team based on their preferred tasks. No experience or equipment is needed! Gloves, tools, and directions, along with morning refreshments and post-event pizza, will be provided.

A Night of Fishing On the Moon... Dreamworks Dinner!

Culinary Services will be transforming the Kitchens for a night of fishing on the moon inspired by DreamWorks! On April 10 from 4pm-8pm, enjoy a culinary celebration of beloved films like Shrek, Madagascar, Kung-Fu Panda, and Megamind. Your favorite venues have been transformed with some movie magic! Check out the Dragon Training Camp (aka Sizzle) or experience Breakfast with the Madagascar Crew (formerly Chef's). Don't miss out on this cinematic cooking experience! Those with a meal plan can access the event with a standard swipe, and those without can pay at the door with cash or credit.

Garden beds outside of UPD

Coming Soon to a Plot Near You

The University Police Department, in partnership with Facilities Management, is in the process of installing a new Community Garden outside the police station. Police Department student interns have been working diligently to get the garden ready to plant a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Over the coming weeks, they will begin planting, with the hope that community members walking by the police department in the fall can help themselves to fresh produce, including strawberries, beans, tomatoes, and so much more!

Shoutouts!

Shoutout to the Culinary Services team who's Pirates of the Caribbean Murder Mystery Dinner was a swashbuckling success!

From the moment the ship set sail at The Kitchens on March 6th, it was clear that the evening was going to be full of intrigue, delicious food, and plenty of pirate shenanigans. Guests dined on a feast fit for a captain, with dishes like the Pork Norrington, Jack Sparrow's Famous Vegan Sea Turtle with Peppers 'n Onions, and more – all while navigating the high seas of mystery and suspense. As the evening unfolded, a pirate met an untimely end, leaving everyone scrambling to gather clues from the menu and props scattered throughout The Galleys (aka the Kitchens). Pirates and detectives alike put their wits to the test, uncovering secrets and trying to solve the mystery: who had done it, where, and how. The adventure concluded with a worthy winner who successfully cracked the case and claimed their share of the reward!

Thanks to all ye brave souls who joined us for this unforgettable evening! Until next time, may yer sails be ever full, and yer mysteries always solved.
