July Column

As we enter the second half of the calendar year, let us take this opportunity to celebrate our collective efforts and continue to harness the same level of teamwork and dedication as we look towards starting the new academic year. It is hard to believe that it is already July – time seems to have flown by! That said, your contributions have not gone unnoticed as every single one of you plays such a vital role in advancing the University's mission.
I also want to take this opportunity to extend a special acknowledgment to the Financial Services and University Budget and Resource Planning teams who are presently engaged in a flurry of year-end activities. Additionally, a BIG shout out goes to the staff in Conference and Events, Student Center Operations, Culinary, Shipping and Receiving, Parking and Facilities. Alongside a handful of partners from other units and divisions on campus, they have truly made our campus shine for the 6,700+ children, families and professionals who are scheduled to visit Sonoma State this summer as part of the summer conferencing season.
Before wrapping up, I want to remind everyone to review their current vacation balance and consider the additional time that will accrue from June to December. It is important to ensure that you won't exceed the maximum vacation balance come January 1. While I understand that scheduling time off can be challenging, taking the time to disconnect and recharge is crucial.
Finally, on behalf of our students who may not realize all the many ways the personnel in Administration and Finance have supported them throughout their studies, I want to say thanks. From helping package their financial aid awards, assisting with loading Wolfbucks onto their ID cards, processing their student assistant paychecks, replacing burned out light bulbs in their dorms, receiving their care packages mailed from home and ensuring a safe campus learning environment – the list goes on and on. Each and everyone of you has undoubtedly made an impact and a difference this past year, and for that, I say one last THANK YOU!

Carrying the torch! (l to r) Celine

and Chandra Holte
From the June 21, 2023 Press Democrat: "The Special Olympics torch is on its way to light the official flame at this weekend’s games in Santa Clara thanks in part to Sonoma County law enforcement. Multiple agencies have participated in the annual campaign to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Northern California athletes and the programs the organization offers. It started with the Healdsburg Police Department carrying the symbolic torch Friday before it was handed off to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. On Tuesday, personnel with the Santa Rosa Police Department, Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, Cotati Police Department, Sonoma State University Police Department and California Highway Patrol ushered the torch further south before passing it to the Petaluma Police Department. This year’s Special Olympics Summer Games will be June 23-25 at the UC Davis campus in Santa Clara. Above, personnel from Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, Cotati Police Department, SSU Police Department and CHP run along Commerce Boulevard, in Rohnert Park, while participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run."
Chandra Holte shared: "It was my pleasure to represent the SSU PD yesterday, along with the 3 student assistants from our Police Department, in running alongside RP/Cotati Police and CHP and taking the torch from SR PD handoff and delivering to Petaluma PD. We ran approximately 7.5 miles from the Mary's in Rohnert Park to Applebees in Petaluma in support of Special Olympics - great event!!!"
Sustainability on Campus
We are currently working on our 2022-2023 Sustainability Snapshot. Of course the groundbreaking for the Solar Array project, the lighting updates throughout campus, and the opening of Stevenson Hall, just to name a few, will be included. We don't want to miss any of the work we are doing on campus and in our division. Perhaps your area or department instituted something new to help reduce use of natural resources? Or a grant was received to help implement a sustainable practice or improved resiliency? Please consider this past fiscal year and if there is something you believe should be included, please send to hodenfie@sonoma.edu by July 10, 2023.
