- Bruce Johnson Art Update
- D. Twedell mentioned that the Bruce Johnson’s “Understanding Matter” sculpture requires additional funding for the foundation and lighting to install. Funding source is currently under review but it will be a combination of the campus and donor funds. The foundation will be bidded competitively.
- M. Limbert and J, Bethke reported that the sculpture represents matters of the universe and the harmony of spheres. Cabinet is already interested and expressed how proud they would be have the piece as part of the campus.
- D. Chun requested confirmation that the art and artist has been vetted by the campus. D. Twedell confirmed.
- E. Chelini expressed concerns of the possibility that the sculpture would be climbed upon and if there was any risk or liability to the campus. J. Bethke reported that the artist intended for the sculpture to be engaging and has not concerns. D. Twedell mentioned that the footing will be 1/3 of the size of the sculpture and intended to address safety concerns and meet building code.
- D. Twedell requested a vote to formally approve the art sculpture to Cabinet for their official approval. It was approved unanimously.
- Copeland Creek Status and Update
- C. Luke presented the Copeland Creek Master Plan. The master plan sets parameters with how the campus interacts with the creek, how to do maintenance, what restoration activity is allowed, environmental planning surrounding Copeland Creek and greater access and enjoyment of the campus. Copeland Creek is part of the Climate Action Plan – the campus’ role in sustainability. It is an opportunity for the campus across disciplines to collaborate and a space on campus that reflects the values of sustainability. (Presentation attached as an Addendum A)
- C. Dinno mentioned that the University District development north of campus has developed computer model flooding studies and impacts on Copeland Creek’s as it impacts the campus specifically in the areas of the Art building, ETC and Cabernet Village. The City of Rohnert Park has up-to-date computer models that can be referenced. Additionally C. Dinno mentioned M. Paulson (City of Rohnert Park) is managing a Grant funded project to construct a continuous pedestrian accessible pathway through campus to Crane Creek Regional Park. T. Hill mentioned that one is Copeland Creek Path – currently being explored at Petaluma Hill Road and Laurel Drive with a stop light. This is going through the hearing process by University District and has subsequent impacts to campus parking with a State park within close proximity to the campus. C. Luke requested to be kept apprised of the activities as it also may impact the Copeland Creek Master Plan Outdoor space.
- Copeland Creek Bank Repairs
- K. Marian reported that project will use bioengineering techniques to restore 10 ft. of an eroding bank section to protect the existing sewer and storm drain infrastructure near the eroding bank. The bank repairs will occur on the northeast corner of the campus and covers 15 ft. x 12 ft. of bank. A ton of rip rap will rebuild the creek base and native soils will be built up to restore the bank above and align it with the existing bank grades. A biodegradable coconut fiber mesh and willow sprigging (stakes) will stabile the reconstructed bank with native plantings for erosion control measures. The work will take approximately 30 days during dry season (August 15 – October 1) to complete. Permits have been acquired by various agencies to proceed. While the work is in progress, a biologist will be under contract to monitor.
- C. Luke mentioned that Copeland Creek also has the various species at Copeland Creek; Foothill yellow legged frog (protected species) and California tiger salamander (endangered species). Also, blackberries exist but are removed as they are non-native (introduced by Luther Burbank).
