January Column
Happy New Year and welcome back!
I hope you all took some time to rest, rejuvenate, and spend time with family and friends over the winter break. The time away gives us all a chance to take a much needed rest before we re-focus our efforts on the university and the many students we serve.
As we begin the Spring semester and our students look towards commencement and their futures, it's time for us to do the same. Sonoma State stands at a promising juncture, and together, we have an opportunity to shape the future of our campus through collaborative efforts and innovative ideas.
Here’s a few ideas on how we can all contribute:
- Supporting Diverse Student Needs Our student body is becoming more diverse, with many first-generation students and those from various backgrounds. By supporting student programs, offering flexible learning pathways, and strengthening career services, we can meet their needs and help them succeed.
- Embracing Technological Advancements New technologies present exciting opportunities. Leading efforts in digital transformation, providing technical support, and using data analytics will help us stay competitive and meet our campus's evolving needs.
- Fostering Community and Campus Life Our close-knit community is one of our greatest strengths. Building partnerships with local businesses, strengthening alumni relations, and organizing campus events are essential in creating a sense of belonging and fostering meaningful connections.
- Promoting Health and Wellness Helping develop and deliver programs that support the physical and mental well-being of our community is crucial. Units may collaborate with others to expand programs and initiatives that promote healthy living, such as cooking classes, nutritional workshops, and wellness events. These efforts will contribute to a healthier, happier campus where everyone feels valued and supported.
- Streamlining Administrative Functions Implement software solutions where possible to automate routine tasks and further support the campus community in gaining efficiency through digitization, automation, and making information easily available and accessible.
- Optimizing & Managing Resources Efficiently Regularly review and optimize the use of campus facilities and resources. Such as continuing to look for ways to reduce energy consumption and utilities costs, or expanding shared services in the division and with other universities under the Multi-University Collaboration program.
- Supporting Staff Managers should establish clear ways for staff to voice concerns and suggest improvements, and staff should feel encouraged to continue bringing forward ideas for continuous improvement. All employees should consider opportunities for continuous professional development from the many offerings available online or in-person from the CSU.
- Creating New Student Opportunities Develop internship programs that allow students to gain practical skills and insights into their future careers while contributing to campus operations. Identify student employment opportunities within Administration and Finance to provide valuable work experience and support for students.
By focusing on these key areas, we can create a successful future for our campus, which would not be possible without your dedication and hard work. Thank you for your commitment to Sonoma State and our students. Let's move forward with confidence and optimism.

Congratulations Carrie!
Due to her extraordinary efforts in implementing CSUBuy P2P on the Sonoma State campus, Accounts Payable and Travel Manager Carrie Schmidt has been asked by the Chancellor's Office to serve as a member of the systemwide CSUBuy P2P implementation team!
This team will support the remaining 15 campuses implementing CSUBuy P2P over the next two years. During this time, Carrie will visit a number of CSU campuses to help guide them through the implementation process to make their respective launches as seamless as the one at SSU.
We are so proud to have Carrie representing SSU with this important systemwide initiative. Congratulations Carrie!
December Recap
It Takes a Village
Members of the University Police Department joined forces with the Rotary Club of Rohnert Park-Cotati and the Rotary Clubs' of Rancho Cotati, Sonoma Mountain Twilight, and other partnering organizations to participate in the 2024 Toy Drive. This joint effort included toy and gift card donations from both individuals and businesses throughout the community, as well as the dedication of over 100 volunteers to wrap and deliver toys to local families. In total, the 2024 Toy Drive brought spirit and joy to 115 families and 311 children across Rohnert Park and Cotati.
Second Annual Suite 2050 Celebration
At the second edition of the combined Adminsitration & Finance-Academic Affairs Suite Celebration, the theme was "Frosty"! And members of both divisions showed up in their best (or worst) holiday styles to mix, mingle, and search for teeny-tiny snowpeople. It was a great opportunity for the two divisions to get together and celebrate the end of 2024 and we're already looking forward to the next event!
Enhance Your Project Management Skills!
The IT SSU Project Management Office (PMO) is excited to announce the upcoming launch of a new Project Management Foundations Course!
Why It Matters: Did you know you might already be doing project work without realizing it? Whether you're leading initiatives or supporting them, this interactive workshop is designed for SSU employees like you. Gain practical and transferable skills to improve how you tackle tasks and achieve goals. You'll learn to approach every phase of a project from initiation through closure, helping you work more efficiently and set yourself up for success.
The PMO team offered a similar course to IT staff, which nearly two-thirds of the department participated in, and ultimately resulted in improved communication and increased productivity across the team. Recognizing that project management skills are valuable for everyone, not just those with formal PM roles, A&F leadership wants to extend this opportunity to other employees who can benefit from these skills.
Course Overview:
What: A hands-on, introductory course covering the fundamentals of projects and project management.
Who: The first program will be open to all A&F employees, with the potential to expand to other groups in the future.
When: The course will be offered in 2025 as a one-day, 3 hour training (exact dates TBD).
Who's Teaching: Experienced project managers from the IT PMO will lead the sessions.
👉 Call to Action: To help us tailor this training to meet your needs, please take a moment to complete our Learning Needs Survey by January 24th. Your feedback is valuable in shaping the course content and ensuring it’s relevant to your work.
The PMO team will provide more details about the course and specific dates once the schedule is set. Stay tuned! If you have any questions or comments, please contact pmo@sonoma.edu We look forward to your participation and to helping you grow your project management skills!
